Shopify. What, where and how?

Some time ago we created a Shopify Manual, which explains how to use the platform.

In most cases, companies do not have a dedicated online store person, so they need to train a few people, if not the whole team. The manual was created to help with that (and to reduce the quantities of emails asking about adding products, but you didn’t hear me say that).

You can sign-up for 14 days free trial of Shopify. If you do, you can follow this tutorial to learn the basics of Shopify store management.

Logging into the Shopify Admin Area

You can login into your admin area by going to yourwebsite.co.uk/admin.

  1. Username would normally be your company email
  2. Password is created by you. If you forgot it, click on the Question Mark icon on the right of the password box. Follow the instructions and you should be getting an email which will guide you through resetting your password.
Shopify Login
Import Sample is an account which we created to test our inventions. We also let our customers play around in it since it’s a safe working environment, which can be beat to hell and back 🙂

Adding new products

Product descriptions and images are very important. Every single product needs high quality images which show exactly why the product is amazing and what it is that you are trying to sell. Description is the same story.

To add new products, you start in your Admin Area.

  1. On the left-menu, go to Products and then Products.
  2. Here you will see a list of products already added to the online store
  3. To add new product, click Add Product in the top-right.
  4. Try to fill out as many fields as possible, including unique SKU, weight and price.
  5. (Optional) You can also add customised SEO for this product on the bottom of the page. If you choose not to, it will be filled automatically by Shopify.
  6. If the product has variants
    1. They can be added using variants option on the same page
    2. Once they are created, each variant needs unique SKU
  7. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PRESS SAVE IN THE TOP RIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

  2. That’s where you can change which image shows on the homepage and the description that appears on the Collection pages (e.g. Summer 2016)

Adding Products to Collections

  1. There are two ways to add Products to Collections
    1. When editing the Product, add it to the collection by using options on the right
    2. When editing the Collection, you can either manually add products into it or set rules for automatic addition
  2. REMEMBER TO PRESS SAVE IN THE TOP RIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

Contact Us, FAQ, Testimonials, About Us

  2. You can modify them by going to Online Store -> Pages
  3. Remember that the whole About Us page is showing on the Homepage
  4. REMEMBER TO PRESS SAVE IN THE TOP RIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

Blog, News

  1. Remember to keep adding new blog posts
  2. These can be added and modified by going to Online Store -> Blog Posts

Website Navigation

That can depend a lot on the theme, but the layout of the navigation is always the same.

  1. Create a menu
  2. Add links to pages, collection, blog, blog posts, products, external sites.
  3. Click Save

And then in the theme options, you can select this menu to appear where you want it.

However! if you want a submenu then it’s a bit more complicated, because you need to create two menus!

Let’s say you want a following structure:

  • T-Shirts
    • Red
    • Blue
    • Green
  • Jackets
  • Hats

Firstly you create a menu with T-shirts, Jackets and Hats, and then you create a menu called T-Shirts (needs to be exactly the same!) and in that menu you create links to Red, Blue and Green tags.

  1. People using your website will be receiving emails from the website, telling them that the order is placed, that their account is active etc.
  2. These emails are based on templates which can be modified by going into Settings -> Notifications.
  3. REMEMBER TO PRESS SAVE IN THE TOP RIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

Other

  1. By going through the options you will notice that there are still many things that may be changed, which are not covered in this document. They are things that generally should be left alone. However, at certain times they may need to be changed. For example if your warehouse moves location, you will need to modify address from which the parcels are sent.
  2. If you have any questions, look at Shopify Help, which, after careful search should answer all the questions you may have.
  3. If that yields no results, let us know by email: info@nott-studios.co.uk

Enjoy your brand new, shining website!
